Our Project

The El Zopilote Farm began as a family business in 2002 when Bruno and his sons, Cristiano and Daniele, bought their first piece of land. After extensive travels, they started searching for land in Central America, first in Costa Rica and then in Nicaragua. They discovered Ometepe Island and, captivated by its natural beauty, decided it was the perfect place to build a nature-integrated hostel.

The project has grown significantly, with many plants and an exponential increase in biodiversity. Additional huts, constructed wetlands for wastewater recycling, eco-friendly compost toilets, terracotta ovens, and solar panels have been added. Most buildings were manually constructed, with materials transported on foot along a 300-meter path.

For the first ten years, all earnings were reinvested into the farm. Today, Cristiano and Daniele, both with Permaculture design diplomas, run the farm. Cristiano, now an expert in mushrooms, has established a mushroom farm at El Zopilote. They employ over thirty local workers and source goods from local markets. Volunteers have always been integral to the project, and we welcome those who wish to join us.

Our Strengths

ECOLOGICAL

Everything we do or create, from constructions to food, is designed to be as ecological as possible. Every decision we make is guided by the fundamental principle of respect for the natural environment in which we live.

NATURAL

The El Zopilote farm is immersed in a complex eco system guided by Mother nature. Every space has been designed as a synergy between living organisms according to the practices of Permaculture. This means that the finca is a place rich with diverse species, both animal and vegetable, who live in total harmony with the inhabitants and visitors.

SOCIAL

Every week visitors of different nationality, gender and languages pass through the farm, investing their talents and energy in the space. This is a source of great inspiration and wealth for us as we are convinced that the positive encounter and socialization of different cultures brings forth long lasting fruits.

LEARNING

El Zopilote is a sustainability learning center where tourists and travelers can learn about permaculture, mushroom cultivation, farm-to-table cooking, and many other things. Don’t be afraid to learn and discover new skills!

ECONOMICAL

Our hostel is accessible for all kinds of budgets. At El Zopilote we have created various kinds of accommodation and we favour those who have great ideas. A large bank account is not paramount in order to visit.

LOCAL

In our restaurant and our cultivations you will always find fresh local products and you will always engage with local people. We believe that the riches of a territory grow and flourish with the relationships you build and the fruit you cultivate.
