GENERAL RULE El Zopilote Eco Hostel aims to be a vibrant Sustainability Learning Center where travelers of all kinds can learn, participate in daily events, and share meaningful experiences at accessible prices. We welcome both young and older travelers, simple backpackers, and those who are not necessarily wealthy.
To maintain fairness and clarity, we offer different participation options for our activities in Ometepe, where the facilitators of each activity decide how to proceed in each case.
Contribution-Based Activities in Ometepe
1) Contribution-based activities These activities do not have a fixed price. However, a contribution from all participants is expected, as this is what allows facilitators to sustain themselves and continue offering their valuable work. Participants are invited to contribute according to their financial possibilities and the value they feel they receive. This system ensures accessibility for everyone while also supporting the people who make the activities possible. The facilitator of the activity occasionally receives something in return from the hostel, such as a meal or another form of support.
2) Contribution-based activities with a minimum Some of our activities in Ometepe require a minimum contribution. This means there is a base amount that everyone pays, and participants may contribute more if they wish. The minimum ensures that facilitators can cover their time, energy, and basic costs, while still allowing flexibility and generosity. It is the responsibility of the facilitator to decide whether to request more than the minimum during the activity. The minimum is paid at our reception. The reception keeps 30% of the total for El Zopilote, and the facilitator receives 70% plus any extra contribution given, without deducting the 30% from the extra amount.
Paid Workshops and Volunteer Participation
3) Paid activities Some specialized workshops have a fixed price. In these cases, the price is clearly defined in advance, and the same price applies to everyone. This system is used for activities that require more structure, preparation, or materials. Payment is made at reception. The facilitator receives 70% of the total, while 30% remains with El Zopilote. Standard volunteers at El Zopilote may request a discount on activities. In this case, the facilitator is not obliged to grant it and maintains full discretion in the decision. If you want to join our team, check out our volunteering options.
