Ometepe Island holds amazing rock art. Indigenous communities began carving these volcanic boulders over three thousand years ago. Today, you can find about 30 authentic petroglyphs of Ometepe right on our permaculture farm. We invite you to explore these ancient treasures completely for free. You can easily do this on your own during your stay.

The Indigenous Cultures Behind the Carvings

Several distinct pre-Columbian cultures shaped the history of Ometepe over the centuries. The earliest carvings date back between 1000 BCE and 300 BCE. Early Chibchan-speaking groups created the first stone art here.

Later, around 800 CE, the Chorotega people arrived on the island. This Mangue-speaking tribe migrated south from southern Mexico. They brought rich artistic traditions. They left intricate spiral designs and animal carvings across the land.

Around 1200 CE, the Nahuatl-speaking Nicarao people also settled on Ometepe. They migrated from central Mexico to escape political conflicts. These ancient peoples considered Ometepe a sacred sanctuary. They carved spirals to represent volcanic energy and water cycles. You can also see carved monkeys, frogs, turtles, and shamanic figures.
