Volunteering at El Zopilote provides a truly unique opportunity. First, you experience beautiful community life directly. Furthermore, you learn about permaculture and contribute to our eco-farm rhythm. We currently offer two different volunteering in Ometepe programs. Specifically, long-term volunteers stay a minimum of two months. Alternatively, short-term volunteers join us for at least two weeks. Both options actively support our eco hostel community. Consequently, volunteers enjoy tropical nature and connect with global travelers. Ultimately, you learn valuable skills through direct daily experience.

Types of Volunteering We Offer

At El Zopilote, volunteers usually help with multiple different tasks. Therefore, you do not just perform one specific activity. We highly appreciate flexible and curious people. Furthermore, we love individuals who enjoy learning new things. Consequently, you contribute greatly to our daily eco-farm life. Here are the main areas for volunteer involvement:

  • Social Media: First, you can help us create engaging content. For example, you can take photos and make short videos. Furthermore, you share daily updates about life at El Zopilote.

  • Food Preparation: Next, you can assist with cutting, cleaning, and peeling. You prepare raw ingredients for processing actively. For instance, you make jams, tomato sauce, and ginger beer. You also prepare hibiscus juice and other homemade products.

  • Yoga: Moreover, you might teach daily yoga classes. Generally, this position requires a reduced number of work hours.

  • Pizza Nights: Additionally, you help serve food during our famous Pizza Nights. We host these fun events every Tuesday and Saturday.

  • Wild Life Tours: Furthermore, we need knowledgeable volunteers for wildlife observation. You guide guests during the day and at night. If you know local fauna well, this fits you perfectly.

  • Painting and Decoration: Next, you can work with natural lime paint creatively. You make beautiful signs and artistic decorations around the farm.

  • Gardening & Farming (Experienced Only): Moreover, skilled gardeners can work in the gardens. You work every morning from 7 AM to 12 PM. Importantly, this specific area requires strong farming experience. Do you want to learn more about permaculture? We highly recommend joining our paid Permaculture School instead. This course offers a much deeper learning experience.

  • Carpentry & Construction (Experienced Only): Additionally, we offer great opportunities for skilled carpenters. You actively support our ongoing construction projects.

  • Promotion Around the Island: Furthermore, you help distribute flyers around the island. You spread the word about our amazing activities everywhere.

  • Many Other Tasks: Finally, volunteers with open eyes always discover new tasks. A good attitude and willingness to learn remain essential. Unquestionably, volunteering here provides a fun and enriching experience.

We gladly welcome responsible, open-minded people of any age. You must simply arrive without harmful habits and help us grow.

1) Free Food and Accommodation (Minimum 2 Months)

Are you interested in joining our long-term volunteer program? First, you must come directly to our reception. You need at least two months of total availability. Next, you must speak personally with our volunteer coordinator. We strongly prefer in-person conversations over email messages. Importantly, you need to see the place firsthand before committing. We do not want to make things harder for you. Actually, we want the exact opposite. Specifically, we want you to understand how El Zopilote works. You must see where you will sleep clearly. Furthermore, you need to feel the tropical climate yourself. You must experience the insects and the heat directly. Consequently, you can decide if this fits you perfectly. We generally welcome everyone who comes here. Therefore, this meeting simply helps you make an informed choice. We absolutely do not use this meeting to screen you out. Please note that we cannot reserve volunteer positions in advance. The only way to secure a spot is by arriving personally.

  • Consequently, you get 2 full days off weekly.

  • We provide free meals and free accommodation.

  • Normally, you sleep in a mixed dormitory called La Brisa. We located this dorm inside the farm. It sits about 350 meters away from the reception.

  • You will find electricity for basic lights there. However, you will not find power outlets to charge devices.

2) Accommodation Exchange (Minimum 2 Weeks)

This short-term volunteering option offers free accommodation. You stay in our specific volunteer area called La Brisa. We located this space about 350 meters from reception. You have electricity for lights, but no power outlets. To help support our community, short-term volunteers contribute $50 USD weekly. Importantly, this is not a fee and not a donation. It is simply prepaid credit for delicious food. In return, each volunteer receives $50 USD to spend. You spend this credit directly in our vegetarian restaurant. Therefore, we ensure your food money stays within the farm. Consequently, you directly support the project instead of outside businesses. Do you prefer cooking in the communal kitchen? That is totally fine. However, the weekly contribution remains exactly the same. You can still spend your credit on meals, snacks, or drinks.

Work Conditions

  • First, you work exactly 5 hours per day.

  • Furthermore, you work 5 days per week.

  • Consequently, you get 2 full days off weekly.

  • You must stay a minimum of 2 weeks.

  • Extensions are certainly possible.

  • However, extending up to eight weeks changes nothing automatically. You do not qualify for the two-month program automatically. You must decide on the long-term program from the very beginning.
